colonia del sacramento

Just down the coast from Montevideo is the beautiful little town of Colonia. It is a UNESCO world hertiage site. It retains much of its early charm with both Spanish and Portugese influences. The new powers were forever fighting over it due to its strategic position on the River Plate and that it faces Buenos Aires. It changed hands no less than seven times before the Spanards managed to hang on to it.

It is a small town that is easily explored on foot. I must confess I think it is a charming place and to me, the sunsets are simply gorgeous. One ticket allows access to the museums and places of interest. They aren't the best musuems in the world but worth a look anyway. We saw everything in little time and for our two days there, we lounged and relaxed and watched the street dogs doing the same.
